Grand Slam Birthday
When a dance party sounds (and is) a drag, one girl comes to the rescue, turning it into one surprisingly fun and inclusive game.
Dory Oslo, the spunky city girl from The Upside-Down Gardener, does it all over again. She not only discovers that she has the ability to make change for someone else, but for herself as well. Full of imagination, humor and heart, A Grand Slam Birthday teaches that even the youngest of children have the ability to shape another’s world, and in the process, learn a valuable lesson about trying something new herself.
Colorful and whimsical illustrations reinforce the message of the story—growth and change through using imagination. A Grand Slam Birthday is a perfect compliment to The Upside-Down Gardener, setting Dory Oslo up in a tale set in the most appropriate location.
Perfect for transitional readers who enjoy a good twist and turn, A Grand Slam Birthday is a book that book lovers and baseball players alike will return to during baseball season, and any time a fun read is desired.

About the Author
Chrysa Smith
Well, let’s see—I’ve spent over 20 years as a freelance magazine writer, covering everything from celebrity chefs and luxury resorts to homing pigeons and pot-bellied pigs. Along the way, my work has appeared in publications like Costco Connection, Pool & Spa Living, Bucks County Magazine, Philly Style, Design NJ, The Cooperator, and more. But beyond the bylines, these experiences have given me a wealth of knowledge about fascinating people, places, and topics.
In the world of children’s literature, I’ve been fortunate to receive multiple Mom’s Choice Awards for excellence in Juvenile Fiction, a top pick on Amazon’s Children’s Bookshelf, a Females in Fiction award, and glowing reviews from The Children’s Book Review and Midwest Book Review. With an endorsement from The Dove Foundation, my passion for storytelling continues to grow. But just as much as I love writing for kids, I love engaging with them in classrooms—sharing the magic of storytelling and the journey behind the words.

I bought this book for a young girl who loves baseball. It was funny how Dory turned a boring birthday party into a fun game. My friend’s daughter loved the book, and then read (well backwards) The Upside-Down Gardener which is really the first story about Dory.
Chrysa Smith offers a different birthday celebration theme that revolves around translating one’s passion into achievable, enjoyable fun everyone can pursue. This goes beyond the usual birthday themes to encourage kids to problem-solve in more cooperative ways.Being positive goes with trying new things, and I believe this will delight picture book reader and their parents with a taste of something different.
