What I’m Doing on My Summer Vacation

by Chrysa Smith

Nothing. That about says it. No trips. No visitors.

But, there is something exciting that I am and will continue to be working on—and that’s my newest book.

Yes, the brain unfroze and the book, with a working title of A Grand Slam Birthday is in the works. In fact, it’s in the copyediting phase, which is always a very good sign.

The entire book writing/production process is like cheering on turtle races. It’s come on, come on, ok, stop. Let’s go, hooray, ok wait. I can see the finish line! There’s much stop and go and patience—something that I (like my main character) don’t have much patience for.

The story, like all of my stories, contains a valuable message—don’t presume you don’t like something until you give it a whirl. Sometimes trying something new leads to a lifetime of enjoyment. It has for me, and perhaps for you too. And there’s the lesson of learning from an unlikely place or person, and innovation when things don’t seem so swell. Yep, it’s all in there, and I suspect it will be enjoyed not only by young readers—but young readers who like baseball, play a sport, like to dance, and are Dory fans.

So keep tuned in. Once it’s in the illustration process, I’ll be back to share more. It’s fascinating how Pat, my illustrator, works in tandem with the story, adding just the right illustration in the right place—-and using her very wry sense of humor to add humorous details—details that sometimes escape everyone at first glance, including me!
