As I’ve gotten older, faith has become an instrumental part of my daily life.
I’ve lived it all my life. Church. Parochial School. The whole nine yards of instruction and involvement. But to be perfectly honest, the only Christian book I had as a child was the Children’s Bible. Sure, the pictures and the grand Old Testament stories of Moses, Noah and Jonah captivated my interest in such adventure. But being taught is different from living it inside. The New Testament readings of Adam and Eve, the loaves and fishes, the temptation of Christ are among those engrained in my mind. But still, it wasn’t faith. I heard them. Not sure if I believed them. And as an adult, studied them.
Then, as with so many people, difficult times led me looking for answers. Self-help books get you thinking, but do not provide a foundation for living. But faith did. I realized, when the storms cleared, that what got me through was faith. Faith that I would not always feel this way. Faith in God. And now, I dare say that I would not be as contemplative, thoughtful and peaceful if I didn’t carry this in my heart. And, as a writer, this carried over, and Look Up, Little Mouse was born.
It’s a Christian story for sure, but for anyone who believes in a higher power, the story strikes a chord. When a little mouse gets himself into a precarious situation, he’s stuck. Nowhere to go—at least without help. And help comes in different forms—but real fear can often leave us feeling untrusting, unwilling, stuck. It’s only with the help of faith that we can get through tough times. In knowing that we’ll get to the other side. This too shall pass. All will be well.
And so, Look Up, Little Mouse attempts to deliver a faith message in a very basic way for children—through animals that, like humans, may be able to offer help. But ultimate help comes from above.
