This Virtual World

by Chrysa Smith

Whether we like it or not, we've been forced into a virtual reality. Virtual learning, virtual meetings---I'm even doing virtual Zumba.

What was overwhelming us in a negative way is now overwhelming us as a necessity---technology.

I don't know about you, but all of this technology is making me more aware of the non-tech world. When I'm outdoors I'm more intently in tune with what's going on in nature. The budding of the trees, the greening of the landscape, the birds building nests in my shrubbery. I'm seeing wild turkeys and foxes during the daytime. Even they're confused about what it is that's going on with this human world.

But real connection can't be made through circuit boards and chips. You just can't replace seeing those smiles, having those conversations face-to-face and maybe even getting a hug or two.

I miss my school visits. Virtual is just not the same. I'm hoping life will return to some semblance of normal in the fall. School buses with kids running off of them. Leaves falling. The new promise of a new year. I'm looking ahead with hope that everyone may pick up life where it left off and perhaps make it even more meaningful. Till then, stay safe. And I'll keep practicing my Skype skills---just in case.

Best wishes to you all!
